At a brand-new Los Angeles studio run by former Overwatch producer and Blizzard VP Chacko Sonny, Netflix appears to be creating a AAA PC shooter.
A game director with shooting experience is needed by the aptly called Netflix Games Studio to work on a “all-new AAA PC game.” It appears to be a live service game, similar to Overwatch, as Netflix intends to offer a “wider experience” in that area.
Candidates must also “have a strong love for collaborative and competitive social systems and games,” as well as “a deep understanding of highly compelling content and how to convey it.”
Future directors are also required to build games using the Unreal Engine and create worlds, characters, and narratives “worthy of a Netflix movie or TV series.”
The massive entertainment streaming company entered the video game market gradually over the past two years by buying a number of mobile game creators, but it took a far greater step in October 2022 when it established Netflix Games Studio.
Other than the fact that Netflix is looking for a game designer with at least ten years of experience, including time spent as a director, the job description doesn’t reveal much else. It may take years before we learn more about Netflix’s AAA game, though, as this seems to be the studio’s first round of hiring.
Mike Verdu, Netflix’s VP of gaming, commented on Sonny’s transfer: “He had a variety of options, but he choose to come here. If there isn’t a sense that we’re in it for the long haul and for the right reasons, you won’t attract people like that to your company to produce the next big thing in gaming.”
Netflix hasn’t been shy about its objectives in the gaming space either; in January 2022, it declared that it wanted to provide the “very greatest” service available.
