Shawnee State University has received $1,040,958 in Choose Ohio First Scholarships from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to support students in key STEM fields such as nursing, medical professions, game design, computer science and engineering technology.
SSU he received two grants. The first, offering $514,500 over five years, will provide new grants to future nurses, medical professionals, and people in tech who support the medical community. The second $526,458 grant continues grants previously offered to enrolled and registered game design and computer science majors. “We are grateful to his ODHE for supporting students in underrepresented areas,” said his Eric Braun, SSU’s vice president of enrollment and enrollment management. “These funds will help enable colleges for more students and recruit top Ohio talent for urgent staffing needs.”
Mr. Brown said the SSU Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program was awarded to his two-year associate degree in nursing, his four-year Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, LPN to RN and RN to where he earned his BSN degree. “The demand for nurses in our area is incredibly high,” he said. “Using these grants to support future nurses is a top priority for us.”
To be eligible, students must be Ohio residents and meet the Shawnee State University merit-based scholarship academic qualifications. These include a minimum GPA of 3.2 and an ACT composite score of at least 21. Alternative placement tests are available for adult students.
Select Ohio First Scholarships are used for student scholarships only. The SSU Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program provides $1500 in tuition for selecting students. “These grants have helped grow our game design and computer science programs,” said Duane Skaggs, associate professor of game development technology and coordinator of SSU’s Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program. For the first time, we look forward to using them to make a difference in our medical community.”
