The main update Xperi showed off at his IFA was wireless playback of immersive movie soundtracks with a 7.1.4 speaker configuration. The demo source was Play-Fi compatible Philips TV streaming audio to a Philips Fidelio FB1 7.1.2 soundbar.

DTS parent company Xperi is demonstrating the latest updates to its Play-Fi wireless audio streaming platform at IFA 2022. Found in products ranging from wireless speakers to the best soundbars, AV receivers, and TVs, Play-Fi lets listeners stream high-definition audio up to 24-bit/192kHz over his WiFi at home in less than a millisecond. You can experience it at He can stream to 16 devices at the same time.

Highlights

  • But for the Xperi’s 7.1.4 demo he settled on one subwoofer. It needed to be loud enough to acoustically compete with the noisy construction equipment used to set up the booths nearby. The most impressive part of the Play-Fi demo was the TV’s simple home theater setup menu.

  • Along with the FB1, his F1 wireless speakers from this company were used for both surround and height effects, and the W1 wireless subwoofer for low frequency effects. Play-Fi can support dual subwoofer setups, something I didn’t know before.

However, you don’t necessarily need a Play-Fi enabled TV to set up a 7.1.4 surround system, as you can also access the same settings via the Play-Fi app. But if you have a Play-Fi TV, you can call it a “speaker” in your multi-room setup, providing another endpoint for music throughout your home.

This allows viewers with Play-Fi enabled TVs (currently limited to his Philips set) to access on-screen menus to add soundbars and speakers, and adjust speaker channels, levels and Settings such as delay can be configured like a menu on his AV receiver.

The second of his Play-Fi features Xperi announced at its IFA is gapless music playback. This is primarily important for classical music where listeners do not want to experience audible gaps between symphonic sections. Even large DJ mixes benefit from Play-Fi working seamlessly.

The DTS Play-Fi product ecosystem currently supports his 400 products from 30 brands, and the company’s list of licensees is constantly growing. Initially, Play-Fi served primarily as a way to stream stereo music to wireless all-in-one speakers, but multi-channel audio support was added, first in 5.1 and now in 7.1.4, the Play-Fi platform. upscaled.

He takes off as one of the viable hardware alternatives to the appearance of AV receivers. Using your TV as a source for wireless playback to Dolby Atmos soundbars, surround speakers, and subwoofers is an easy and affordable way for your audience to step up to higher quality, fully immersive sound. Also, as DTS demonstrated in his IFA, the simplicity of this process means that even casual users will not be afraid to set it up. Simply turn on your TV and select the wireless speaker you want to play from the on-screen menu.
