  1. The Department of Homeland Security is recruiting 50 AI experts for an “AI Corps” to combat fentanyl distribution, online child exploitation, and cyberattacks.
  2. The AI Corps is part of a larger effort to use AI for national security goals, in line with President Biden’s executive order to establish AI standards.
  3. DHS has been using AI, such as machine-learning models, to aid in its missions, including tracking suspicious activities at the southern border.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the launch of the new AI Corps, a team of experts dedicated to utilizing artificial intelligence to combat the distribution of fentanyl, child exploitation, and cyberattacks.

The AI Corps will focus on developing and implementing advanced AI tools and technologies to detect and prevent the illegal distribution of fentanyl, which has been a growing concern in the United States in recent years. The team will also work to identify and thwart online child exploitation activities, as well as strengthen cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure and national security.

“The launch of the AI Corps represents a significant step forward in our efforts to combat these pressing national security threats,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, we will be better equipped to identify and respond to these complex and evolving challenges.”

The AI Corps will bring together a diverse group of experts, including data scientists, engineers, and cybersecurity specialists, to develop innovative AI solutions to address these critical issues. The team will work closely with law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies, and international partners to deploy these technologies effectively.

“The use of artificial intelligence in our national security efforts is crucial in today’s rapidly evolving threat landscape,” said John Thompson, the newly appointed head of the AI Corps. “I am confident that with the expertise and dedication of this team, we will make significant strides in combating fentanyl distribution, child exploitation, and cyberattacks.”

The launch of the AI Corps comes as part of the DHS’s broader efforts to modernize and strengthen its capabilities to address emerging threats to national security. The agency has been working to leverage advanced technologies, such as AI, machine learning, and data analytics, to enhance its ability to detect, prevent, and respond to a wide range of security challenges.

With the establishment of the AI Corps, the DHS aims to stay ahead of the curve in the fight against these critical threats, underscoring its ongoing commitment to protecting the American people and securing the nation’s borders.
