With the granting of approval in principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (HHI Group) for four autonomous functions, including navigation, machinery health management, fire fighting management, and network infrastructure, ABS’ industry-leading support for the development of autonomous technology at sea advanced further.
The autonomous navigation system HiNAS 2.0 developed by Avikus, a company specializing in autonomous navigation for HHI Group, has received approval from ABS and will be a standard application for all new construction boats at HHI Group starting in 2019.
The shipbuilding division of the HHI Group’s headquarters, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), has received permission for its HiCBM mechanical automation system, HiCAMS onboard integrated safety control system, and Pont.OS autonomous ship integrated platform.
HiCBM and HiCAMS are powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which can identify and manage emergencies like fires without the need for human participation, including evaluating the state of mechanical equipment.
The largest electronics and IT trade exhibition in the world, CES 2022, which took place in Las Vegas in January, saw HHI and ABS sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The two businesses will work together on autonomous technology for the maritime sector as part of the partnership, and they will offer deliverables including AIP and ship operational testing.
The integrated platform, Pont.OS, is an open platform that can integrate and control many autonomous ship functions. It is anticipated that Pont.OS will offer the infrastructure necessary for safe autonomous and remote ship operation.
