Nokia 5.1 becomes the latest smartphone under HMD Global’s kitty to receive the Android 10 update. Launched in 2018, the Nokia 5.1 is catching up to Android 10, but it may not be the latest Android version update. Nokia phones are launched with the Android One program which guarantees at least three years of Android version updates, and Nokia 5.1 has only completed two. Either way, Nokia 5.1 users have a reason to rejoice once they get all the new Android 10 features, including dark mode.
HMD Global product chief Juho Sarvikas announced the start of the Android 10 launch program for the Nokia 5.1. He tweeted: “The launch of # Android10 for # Nokia5dot1 is available today. Get ready to update your phone experience with all the latest features!”
To update your Nokia 5.1, go to settings, then About the phone, and finally, Software update to check if you have the update to Android 10.
The launch of Android 10 on the Nokia 5.1 varies by country, meaning that only users who have received it from one of the first wave countries will receive the update right now. The remaining users will receive the update later, as and when HMD Global makes the announcement. The first wave countries are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Even in the first wave countries, only 10% of Nokia 5.1 units will receive the Android 10 update initially. By 11 October, 50% of the units will be covered and the final launch covering 100% of the Nokia 5.1 units will receive the update by 13 October. However, Nokia 5.1 users in India will have to wait this time around.
HMD Global said Indian users of the Nokia 5.1 will receive the Android 10 update by October 29th. This is the first time the software launch on a Nokia device seems delayed compared to other markets. The company did not say why it decided on a later date for the release of Android 10 on Nokia 5.1.
Earlier this week, HMD Global rolled out the Android 10 update to Nokia 3.1, which is the latest Android version update for the phone since its three-year cycle is over. Meanwhile, HMD Global is starting the Android 11 update launch cycle later this year with the Nokia 8.3 5G smartphone and a few other models.
Nokia 5.1 launched in 2018, which means it still has one year left to reach the end of the cycle for Android version updates.
