YouTube is now streaming video in HD quality that maxes out at 1080p on mobile networks in India. The streaming platform had placed a video resolution restriction in March, when people were forced to stay home and work. But now that people are leaving their homes and going to their offices, there is less tension on mobile networks, which is why 1080p HD videos are back on YouTube.
YouTube limited streaming to 480p resolution in an attempt to decongest bandwidths and prevent networks from being overloaded. This restriction was imposed on both mobile and broadband connections. However, YouTube relaxed this move by allowing high-quality videos (up to 4K resolution) over Wi-Fi and broadband connections on smartphones in July.
Mobile phones in India can now play the highest resolution supported on cellular networks. Hence, most Android phones will be able to play 1080p video while some of them can play 1440p video. Recent iPhone models, such as iPhone XR and iPhone 11, with iOS 14, can now play videos up to 4K on mobile networks. We were able to play 4K video iPhone XR and 1440p video on Oppo Find X2 Pro on both Airtel and Jio networks. But you might not get this resolution from the start because this is still a metered connection.
YouTube’s relaxation of video streaming to mobile phones, however, comes with a long delay. This restriction by YouTube was imposed for its streaming service in several countries, but only lasted a few months. However, in India, YouTube felt the need to lift this restriction on broadband networks by July. He somehow wasn’t convinced that Indian cellular companies will be able to support the high volumes of data that might start streaming when users watch 1080p or 4K video on cell phones.
Although streaming limits are now removed, it is not surprising that the restrictions will recur in the future if there are more blocks, when people begin to rely on their mobile networks more than ever.
