Xiaomi overtook Apple to secure third place on the list of the best shipping smartphone brands. According to the latest data from not one but two analytics companies, IDC and Counterpoint Research, Apple has slipped to fourth place in the global smartphone market for the third quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, Samsung has emerged as the leading smartphone brand, remaining standing. a total shipment of 79.8 million units in the third quarter of 2020. The second place now has Huawei with 50.9 million shipments.

In an interesting twist, Xiaomi shipped 46.2 million units in the third quarter of 2020 while the iPhone maker launched a total shipment of 41.7 million units during the same period. In terms of market share, Xiaomi contributed 13% and Apple stands at 11%, according to Counterpoint Research. The International Data Corporation (IDC) said that markets such as India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Russia saw a sharp rise in smartphone shipments between July and September.

According to IDC research director Nabila Popal, this finding is the result of pent-up demand for smartphones after global locks were starting to loosen. However, the most important factor that drove maximum sales was hefty smartphone promotions and discounts. In India, the growing need for online courses and distance learning has boosted sales of low-end smartphones. As a result, competition in the entry-level smartphone market in India has intensified more than ever.

Counterpoint Research revealed that Realme was the fastest brand that managed to oust 50 million units by the third quarter, thanks to its affordable 5G portfolio in China. Realme’s domestic market recorded the highest turnout, ensuring quarterly growth of 90% in terms of sales.

But while some of the major smartphone brands have seen tremendous growth in their shipments, major markets have plummeted. This was due to the delay that Apple caused at the launch of its 2020 iPhone align. Instead of launching into its traditional period in September, the iPhone 12 series launched in early October. The decline in smartphone shipments in markets, including China, Western Europe and North America during that period, represents the dominance of iPhone on smartphones of other brands.

Xiaomi has overtaken Apple in the global market in terms of smartphone shipments, but Samsung has eliminated them all from the park.
