After leading the budget segment and the mid-range segment, Xiaomi may soon venture into the foldable smartphone market. There’s no denying that foldable smartphones are becoming a thing with Samsung ruling for now.
Xiaomi had previously unveiled the Mi Mix Alpha, which was a concept device with a flexible OLED display. Although it was just a conceptual device that wasn’t released in India, Xiaomi now plans to take a plunge into the foldable smartphone market.
According to a report in XDA, evidence of Xiaomi working on a foldable device was found within MIUI code 12. The report reveals that the next device was codenamed “Cetus”.
“We looked at the code inside the latest China Closed Beta of MIUI 12 for Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and found other clues for the device and some of its specs. Cetus is clearly a folding, as the device returns a true value for the method called isFlodAbleDevice (possibly a typo, meaning isFoldAbleDevice). There is a lot of other code, related to monitor the fold of the display and identify changes to the fold state, which gives us confidence in the complaint, “says the XDA report.
The report also claims that Xiaomi’s new foldable device will run on MIUI on Android 11. In terms of processor, it will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. What looked really cool about the upcoming smartphone is its camera, which could be a 108MP main camera.
Rumored to be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series processor and other high-end specs, the Xiaomi foldable phone will come at a premium price. However, this isn’t the first time Xiaomi has hinted at the launch of a foldable device. The company has already anticipated its foldable smartphone concept.
It is not clear if Xiaomi will make the “Cetus” official but considering the furore created on the market by folding smartphones, Xiaomi would certainly consider joining the championship.
