CLOVIS – Volleyball coaches Darrel Ray and Ruth Chavez have returned to their familiar grounds.
Ray, who coached Clovis High for eight seasons (2009-16) before taking on the same-term assistant position at Friona under former Roswell High manager Bryan Masse, has returned to the helm of the Lady Wildcats.
Chavez, who replaced him at CHS, is up against the Portales High manager. He has spent the last three years with Clovis after a 29-year run, the last 15 as head coach, at PHS.
Clovis and Portales open their late 2020 season this week and both coaches are optimistic looking forward to a regular 12-game season.
“We have a lot of experience; I think we have eight seniors on our team, “Ray said.” It’s a pretty athletic and qualified team; we’re not very big. “
Most of the top players are seniors, including outside hitter / setter Kameron Kelley and Tabatha Gallegos, center hitter Kaci Cabeldue and Mili Ratledge, center hitter Kiki Cox, defensive specialist Camryn Barros, and freer Janelle Macias. Juniors expected as key contributors are outside hitter Skyler Jordan and defensive specialist Hannah Gallegos (Tabatha’s cousin).
