Modern vloggers use different types of cameras to film their content. Most digital content creators, especially travelers, in India or out will be seen carrying heavy camera bags to store their devices. This can include DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, action action, or even drones for capturing cinematic footage.
According to the latest order from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), drones cannot be carried in hand luggage on flights to India. According to BCAS, which is India’s civil aviation safety regulator, drones now fall into the category of “restricted items”. Significantly, restricted items on flights include sharp objects such as knives and scissors and ammunition among other things.
The restriction on carrying drones as part of hand baggage was imposed due to cyber security concerns. The order came in response to a clarification requested by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), as reported by MediaNama.
The ordinance issued by the BCAS states: “The matter has been examined in the light of existing regulations and clarifications provided by the Directorate General for Civil Aviation. As a result, the Competent Authority has determined that Drone / Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) / Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) fall into the category of restricted items, so they cannot be carried in hand luggage. “
Similarly to other cameras, drones are powered by batteries. And for now we know that drones are not allowed as part of hand luggage on Indian flights. It is still unclear whether a person can carry the device and batteries separately and divide it into hold baggage and hand baggage respectively. For example, a power bank can be carried as part of hand luggage, but not as part of hold luggage.
Many countries have different sets of civil aviation safety rules that you should follow. But in recent times, as vlogging has become one of the legitimate professions many pursue, restrictions such as not carrying a drone on a plane could certainly be difficult for some.
