Twitter head of security is famous hacker Peiter Zatko aka Mudge

Some high profile Twitter accounts including Joe Biden, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Elon Musk were hacked a few months ago in July 2020. Popularly known as bitcoin hack, Twitter got banged by users after security breach. The company has since taken steps to protect its users’ data. In the latest news, Twitter he appointed Peiter Zatko, known by his hacker name “Mudge”, to lead his security division.

Mudge has previously worked with organizations such as L0pht, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), cDc Communications among others. Regarding the collaboration with Twitter, Mudge confirmed the news by tweeting: “I am very excited to join the executive team of Twitter! “

As the Twitter head of security, Mudge will be responsible for addressing everything from engineering missteps to misinformation. Mudge will report directly to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as per reports. For now, Mudge is expected to take over after a 45- to 60-day review of Twitter’s current measures and practices.

In an exclusive interview, Mudge said he will look into “information security, site integrity, physical security, platform integrity – starting to touch platform abuse and manipulation – and engineering. “

The microblogging site has faced some security challenges in the past. The most recent of these was the bitcoin scam as we said. In addition to this, a year ago, the US government also accused two men of spying on behalf of Saudi Arabia when they were working Twitter, according to Reuters. It was said that the Twitter employees passed on private information about the kingdom’s critics.

“The data breach this summer was an important reminder of how far away Twitter has to go and build some of the basic security features needed to run a serve targeted by far more experienced opponents than the teenagers arrested for that incident, “said Alex Stamos, a former Facebook Chief Security Officer and current Stanford researcher who helped lead efforts to combat election misinformation.

Stamos, who once worked for Mudge’s security consulting firm, called it a great fit for a company lacking the financial strength of Facebook and Google. “They will have to come up with creative solutions to these problems, and if Mudge is famous for anything about safety, it’s being creative.”

Mudge said he is committed to improving public conversations on the platform. He praised a recent move to increase “friction” by prompting users to comment instead of just retweeting someone’s tweet. Mudge also said: “They (Twitter) are willing to take risks. With the challenges of algorithms and algorithmic biases, they don’t stand by and wait for someone else to solve the problem. “
