If you’ve been thinking about Twitch streams especially while watching a pandemic, you’re far away from only. Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet found Twitch views more than doubled in one year, from “Just” 3.1 billion hours in the first quarter of 2020 to 6.3 billion hours in the same quarter of 2021. Most of that increase occurred in the spring of 2020, when blockages forced people to flee. but there has been essentially steady growth since then – that’s a jump of 16.5 percent from only the previous quarter.

Others don’t have as many opportunities to brag. YouTube Gaming had its pandemic-related spike, but watch time dropped dramatically in the first quarter to 1.37 billion hours. They are now lower than before everyone was urged to stay home, the data show. That gave Facebook Gaming an opportunity to narrow the gap. With a display figure of 1.06 billion hours, it was the smallest of the top three, but it represented steady growth that didn’t stop from its peak in the early 1920s.

For Twitch, at least some of that growth has come from non-game streams. “Chat” was the most followed category on the Amazon service for the second consecutive quarter and now accounts for 12% of everything people watch on the platform. Grand Theft Auto V and League of Legends were far runners up. Garena Free Fire’s battle royale led YouTube Gaming viewers, while PUBG Mobile remained Facebook The main attraction of the game.

The continual increase and movement of content is not entirely surprising. Twitch has already dominated live streaming and became even more popular as musicians and other non-game creators flocked to the platform as a substitute for in-person gigs and discussions. Gaming-focused streamers also have more reasons to use Just Chatting – if they can’t socialize in person, they might as well make money with virtual conversations. The question, of course, is whether a live streaming service can maintain this momentum once mass vaccinations make it safer to go out.
