Tech News: TCL unveils three new affordable smartphones.
Cheap phone announcements are coming fast this month: first there was the Samsung series of Galaxy A phones, then HMD’s revamped line of Nokia phones, and now TCL is expanding its line of 20 series smartphones with some new models. .
The most interesting model is the $ 549 TCL 20 Pro 5G (above), equipped with a Snapdragon 750G chipset with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. As you would expect from a company known primarily for its TVs, TCL has paid particular attention to the 20 Pro 5G’s 6.67-inch, 20: 9 curved AMOLED screen. Not only did TCL build the panel itself, but it also made a number of improvements to the NXTVISION screen, including better color accuracy, more natural flesh colors on the screen, and an AI function that analyzes what’s happening on the screen and adjusts brightness. , color, and contrast to match the action.
For better or for worse, TCL’s approach to cameras hasn’t changed much since the company last released new smartphones. The 20 Pro 5G uses the same 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 sensor as the TCL 10 Plus, along with a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, 5-megapixel macro shooter, and 2-megapixel sensor for gathering depth information. Rounding out the package is a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, a Super Bluetooth feature that can send audio to up to four devices at the same time, and a 4,500mAh battery which, according to TCL, should keep the 20 Pro 5G running for a while. ‘all day.
The 20 Pro 5G is accompanied by the € 269 20L + – a truly meaningless name if we’ve ever heard one – which features a respectable set of cameras. The ultra wide-angle and 2-megapixel 8-megapixel macro cameras may be slightly inferior to those of this phone’s more expensive counterpart, but the 20L +’s main camera uses a 64-megapixel sensor that should capture at least a little more detail than this phone’s. how much would you get out of the 20 Pro 5G. And that’s not the only thing the 20L + has that its more expensive counterpart doesn’t.
As far as we know, the 20L + uses a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen similar to the Pro model, but with a twist: TCL says this is its first phone with a circular polarization screen, which means colors should look natural even if you’re wearing sunglasses. And while the Snapdragon 662 chipset (paired here with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage) can’t compete with the 20 Pro 5G’s more powerful silicon, the 20L + ‘s 5,000mAh battery should give it a few more hours. work. Expect this model to go on sale in Europe tomorrow as well, although we’ve heard that a modified version of this phone will arrive in the US later this year.
TCL’s series of new phones is completed by the 20L, a slightly more modest version of the 20L +. It uses the same screen (including that nice polarizing technology), the same cameras, the same battery, and the same Snapdragon 662 chipset. The only differences are the RAM and storage – the base version of the 20L ($ 229) has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of eMCP storage, but a slightly faster variant has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of faster UFS storage.
Competition in the more modest segments of the smartphone market is stiff enough and we’ll have to wait and see if TCL can tap into the momentum it has developed towards 2021. If you’re starting to think a TCL smartphone might be the right choice for you, we recommend to keep two things in mind. First, stay tuned for our full reviews. And second? All three of these new devices will go on sale tomorrow in the UK, Italy and Portugal, followed by the rest of the world in the coming weeks.
