The idea is to improve productivity and multitasking while easily fitting in your pocket.
The phone, which will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress technology conference in Barcelona, features a flexible 5-inch display that slides out to expand to 6.5 inches.
Admittedly, phones aren’t something you can buy anytime soon. The phone is in the early concept stages and we don’t know how much it will cost. Motorola isn’t the big player in the mobile industry it once was – the company shipped 51 million units in 2021, according to Statista data.
The design at least shows innovation in a market that has struggled to come up with new features to please consumers.
Companies want to change that with new form factors such as foldable displays.
“This underscores the current explosion of innovation using flexible display technology, with different concept products being experimented with in different form factors,” said Ben Wood, principal analyst at CCS Insight.
The device comes at a difficult time for smartphone makers. Over the past year, industry sales fell 11.3% as consumers tightened their belts. This exacerbates the ongoing trend of people sticking with their phones longer as upgrades from major vendors are being phased in.
Lenovo, which owns Motorola, also unveiled a rollable laptop at this week’s conference. Like smartphones, laptops slowly stand up vertically, allowing you to view more web pages or open multiple apps on a single screen.
