Tech News: Stadia could make its retail debut in the upcoming Google Store in New York..
Google’s upcoming retail store in New York could mark the first sale of Stadia and its hardware in an in-person store.
One of the benefits of Stadia is that you don’t need to buy anything to try it out, as the Stadia controller is entirely optional and the service offers completely free games. That said, the Stadia Controller, also available in the Stadia Premiere Edition bundle with Chromecast Ultra, offers low latency and a truly great gaming controller.
However, since the service’s launch in November 2019, it has not been possible to purchase a Stadia Controller or Premiere Edition from a retail store. The closest we’ve gotten is Best Buy which offers Stadia Premiere Edition, but only through its web store.
This morning, Google announced its plans to open an in-person Google retail store in New York City as an extension of its Chelsea campus. In the blog post, Google included a speculative image of what this retail presence would look like, with many of Google’s biggest brands, including Nest, Fitbit, and Pixel, featuring featured signage.
An eagle-eyed Stadia fan, Sean McDonald Twitter, zoomed in completely too much in the image – in Blade Runner style – and found that in one of the windows of the Google mockup, there is Stadia. While the image quality could be much better, the ‘S’ in the Stadia logo is clearly recognizable.
If the real New York Google Store appears to be like this mockup, we can assume that it will be possible for potential players to walk into this store, buy a Stadia controller or pack, and hang out with it. Beyond that, there may also be a demo station that allows in-store customers to try out Stadia for themselves.
For now, there’s no way to be sure Stadia will be featured in the New York Google Store, but if the retail store is meant to reflect products from the online Google Store, there’s no reason to rule out Stadia.
