Carmen Corley and Jake Van Emburgh of Oklahoma earned the title of Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week for Week 6.
This is Corley’s second honor in 2021. He scored a leaderboard win on field no. 1 in two sets, defeating Sonia Smagina n. 81 of Kansas. After taking the first game, Corley actually fell behind in the second 5-0 before organizing a comeback and winning the next five sets in a row, ultimately forcing a tiebreaker, which Corley won, 7-6 (6 ). It was the second single win in the standings for the second year from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In doubles, again paired with their older sister Ivana, the Corley duo defeated their Jayhawk counterparts on court no. 1, 6-2, for their sixth consecutive victory.
Van Emburgh defeated player no. 67 single in the nation and reigning single champion of the central ITA region from the state rival Tulsa. From on field no. 1, Van Emburgh won two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Then from the field of double n. 3 with teammate Matt Rodriguez, Sooner’s duo ruled out their opponent Golden Hurricane, 6-0. The pair are now 4-0 in 2021….
