Satya Nadella says Facebook, Twitter should focus more on safety

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said social media sites like it Facebook, Twitter, and others should focus more on Internet security.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nadella said she would apply some of Microsoft’s expertise in internet security into Bytedance’s short video platform, TikTok. “What needs to happen is a real reform in social media where internet security is a key consideration,” Nadella said citing WSJ. Microsoft recently lost an offer to acquire the US arm of TikTok as Bytedance partnered with Oracle.

Earlier this year, consumer advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against TikTok for allegedly violating a children’s law and violating a settlement agreement on allegations that it collected personal data from children. TikTok had agreed to pay a $ 5.7 million settlement with federal regulators for claims that it collected personal information from children.

Nadella said in the interview that Microsoft has experience in addressing such content-related issues through its Xbox gaming platform. He said Microsoft could use his experiences.

“Regulation will never come fast enough to overcome some challenges,” he told WSJ, adding that “any large-scale product with undesirable consequences will face regulatory scrutiny.”

US President Trump signed an executive order against the short video platform owned by Bytedance and WeChat. It had only given TikTok 90 days to sell its stake to a US-based company or face a ban in the country. Trump had even refused to extend the deadline. The US president had called TikTok and WeChat a threat to “national security” in his executive order. Trump’s repeated threats were also the reason for CEO Kevin Mayer’s resignation just 100 days after joining the company.

However, Trump soon accepted the Oracle-Bytedance deal and gave it a thumbs up. He called the deal “fantastic” and even said he gave it his “blessing”. “If they do, that’s great, if they don’t, that’s fine too,” Trump said.
