Policy to allow the proliferation of public Wi-Fi hotspots on the anvil: official DoT

A policy to allow the proliferation of public wifi hotspots in the country is on the anvil, a senior telecommunications department official said Tuesday. Member of the Department of Telecommunications (Technology) K Ramchand said that all technologies, including satellite communication, will be exploited to provide broadband to all citizens.

“In the near future, we will come out with a policy that will allow for the proliferation of public wifi hotspots … once again there will also be a demand for bandwidth to provide these public wifi hotspots, and we will try to use all technologies including satellite technologies. , to provide broadband to all citizens of this country, “Ramchand said speaking at a virtual” India SatCom 2020 “event organized by the Broadband India Forum (BIF). Satellite communication not only provides direct links via VSAT, but also acts as a backhaul for terrestrial communications, he pointed out.

“With the arrival of LEOs (Low Earth Orbits) and in-flight communications, the scope of service delivery is unlimited. We hope this technology will complement other technologies available to deliver communications to citizens, “he said. He stressed that next generation 5G technology is around the corner.

“As for new technologies, 5G is already knocking on doors. Probably in the next calendar year we will see the launch of 5G probably by some operators, “he said. The growing demand for services and the advent of new technologies will require cooperation and close coordination between the various departments to ensure optimal use of the spectrum and technologies, he said.
