Digital Payments and Technology Platform Paytm has announced the launch of its Android Mini App Store to support Indian startups and developers to bring their innovative products to the masses. Mini apps are a customized mobile website that gives users an app-like experience without having to download them, benefiting millions of citizens who have little data and phone memory.
Paytm will not charge developers for the listing and distribution of mini-apps within its app. For payments, developers will be able to choose between Paytm Wallet, Paytm Payments Bank, UPI, net-banking and cards to their users.
The Mini App Store comes with a developer dashboard for analytics, payment collection, and various marketing tools for interacting with users. This app store is running in beta with select users and recorded over 12 million visits in September.
Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and CEO of Paytm, said: “I am proud that today we are launching something that creates an opportunity for every Indian app developer. Paytm Mini App Store enables our young Indian developers to leverage our reach and payments to create innovative new services. For Paytm users, it will be a seamless experience that requires no separate download and allows them to use their preferred payment option. “
Paytm Mini App Store offers direct access to discover, browse and pay without downloading or installing separate apps. To date, more than 300 app-based service providers such as Decathalon, Ola, Park +, Rapido, Netmeds, 1MG, Domino’s Pizza, FreshMenu, NoBroker have already joined the program.
Google, on the other hand, noted that it’s about setting a March 31, 2022 timeline for all apps currently using a alternative payment system.
Google has also put forward a few points to eliminate confusion among users regarding payments and billing methods through Google. “Google Play Billing is a billing system that supports many ways of paying for consumers – Play Billing today supports more than 290 forms of payment worldwide. In recent years we have added more local forms of payment in India , including credit and debit cards, net banking, carrier billing, gift cards, and all supported UPI apps. And we will continue to work with developers and consumers to add additional forms of payment, ”Google noted.
Google’s policies require developers who distribute their apps on Play to use the Google Play billing system if they offer in-app purchases of digital goods. It also requires a cut of 30 per cdnt for the list of apps on Play. Google noted that the payment method is not new and that over 97% of developers with apps on Google Play already comply with the policy. Google also added that it is adding listening sessions, policy workshops and extensions in the time allowed for developers to get used to Google Play’s billing system.
