When Netflix canceled its one-month free trials earlier this month, the company suggested it would introduce more promotional offers to attract customers. And true to its word, Netflix confirmed a 48-hour free trial on December 4th. The promotional offer called “StreamFest” will only be available to Indian users on that date as the company is being tested. Netflix could expand the offering to other countries after seeing the response in India.

“An idea we’re excited about – and we’ll see how it goes, we think giving anyone in one country free access to Netflix for a weekend could be a great way to expose a group of new people to the amazing stories we have.” Netflix COO Greg Peters confirmed in an interview following the company’s third quarter 2020 results. “To really create an event and hopefully get a group of these people to register.” The development was first reported by the protocol.

Previously, when Netflix offered free trials, users were required to enter payment details so that after a month of free streaming, the company could deduct the monthly fee by default. However, users always had the option to cancel their subscription if they wanted to. StreamFest, however, will not require any payment details from users and will be able to stream for free.

On the increase in the price of Netflix memberships, Peters said: “Let’s make an assessment: Do we really believe we offer more value to members?” he said, adding that “a guiding star we cherish in this entire process is that we think we are simply an incredible entertainment value – and we really want to remain an incredible value as we continue to improve service and grow.”

Indian users can access Netflix membership by signing up for some postpaid plans. Last month Netflix gave users access to some shows and movies at no cost. Netflix got 2.2 million subscribers worldwide in the third quarter of 2020.

Netflix offers 48 hours of free streaming to Indian users as a no-cost promotion. The promotional offer will be available on December 4th.
