On Thursday, a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court sentenced Dauda Francis, a 20-year-old bricklayer, to six strokes of the cane for stealing two mobile phones valued N210,000. Francis, who lives in Kaduna’s Rigachikun, admitted to one count of stealing. Francis was also sentenced to five months in jail by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel. Francis was not given the option of paying a fine by Emmanuel. The offender had previously pleaded with the court to balance justice with mercy, claiming that he was aware of his wrongdoings and had learned his lesson.
