When his efforts failed, the man went into the bathroom, which can be accessed from outdoors, and tried to get into the store portion of the gas station through the ceiling, but failed in that attempt as well, DeCiero said.
Sometime early on Saturday morning, the man went to the Gulf Gas Station, 233 Maple St., which was closed, and tried to pry its door open, Detective Scott DeCiero said Monday.
It is not known how much money was in the containers, the detective said.
“Right after, it appears he went over to the nearby McDonald’s,” said DeCiero of the burger chain’s 250 Maple St. site. “They have those containers outside where you can throw in change to donate, and he ripped those off and stole the donation money.”
“It’s definitely the same guy,” he said.
The man then forced open the drive-thru window, reached in and stole a drink from a fridge he could reach from outside before leaving, DeCiero said.
Police say the suspect is a white man with a thick, dark beard. He was wearing a flat-brimmed hat and a gray-hooded sweatshirt.
