Photo by Cody Tomer John Marshall’s Zara Zervos battled vocal cord dysfunction and still managed to earn the first all-state team in two fall sports during her senior year.

MOUNDSVILLE – When Zara Zervos was a little girl, her parents told her to be herself and not try to be anyone else.

These words guided the John Marshall High School senior competitor throughout her life and especially during her senior year, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and her process with vocal cord dysfunction.

Despite everything, she still managed to run cross country, play soccer, swim and plan to run on the track this spring. So far, she has earned first team accolades in all states in both cross country and soccer and is poised to be one of the top contenders in both swimming and track.

Her leadership, commitment and determination have paid off as she was selected as the winner of the 2021 Doug Huff Award from the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
