Reliance Jio is planning to introduce 5G smartphones for less than Rs 5000, after which the company will gradually reduce the price from Rs 2500 to Rs 3000 a unit when it increases the operation. “Jio wants to carry the device for less than Rs 5,000. When we increase sales, the price can be between Rs 2,500-3,000,” a company official told PTI.
According to the report, Jio will target 20-30 crore of cell phone users currently using the 2G connection. At the moment, 5G smartphones are available in India in the price range starting at Rs 27,000.
While there is still no confirmation as to whether this smartphone will work on Android or not, it is very likely that it is an Android phone. Jio had previously made 4G phones with KaiOS, but they were launched as smart feature phones instead of real smartphones. If this phone is going to be a smartphone, it is almost certain that it will run on Android, although instead of using full Android, Jio could use the Lite version of the Google operating system.
Another reason this new Jio phone will be powered by Android is the partnership between Google and Jio announced earlier this year. Google invested over $ 4 billion in Jio, and at the time said the partnership would focus on creating more affordable Android smartphones for Indian consumers.
Jio was the first company to launch 4G mobile phones in India for free to consumers, where they were required to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500 for a Jio Phone.
At Reliance’s virtual annual general meeting in July, Reliance CEO Mukesh Ambani announced Reliance Jio’s business pact with Google to jointly develop affordable 4G and possibly 5G smartphones for a ‘2G mukt Bharat’ ( without 2G India) in the future.
Reliance is also working on its 5G network equipment and has asked the Telecommunications Department to allocate its spectrum for testing before exporting these products. The government has yet to heed Reliance Jio’s request.
At present, India does not have 5G services and the government has not even assigned the spectrum to telecom operators for carrying out field trials aimed at promoting home ecosystems for next-generation technology.
