In a world where anything written in ink can become real, Inkbound takes place in The Atheneum, a place that contains every story ever written. Inkbound focuses on cooperative gameplay and procedurally generated adventure, and it’s an online-only game (though it can be played solo). Shiny Shoe promises continuous game updates, none of which will be locked behind a paywall.
Shiny Shoe, the San Francisco-based studio behind Monster Train, has unveiled Inkbound as its newest project. The latest game from the company is a vibrant strategy/tactics RPG/roguelike. It also has some action-RPG DNA, as you can see from the trailer above, and will undoubtedly remind you of Torchlight at first sight.

Ryan McCaffrey is IGN’s executive editor of previews and host of both IGN’s weekly Xbox show, Podcast Unlocked, as well as our monthly(-ish) interview show, IGN Unfiltered. He’s a North Jersey guy, so it’s “Taylor ham,” not “pork roll.” Debate it with him on Twitter at @DMC_Ryan.
Part of the core gameplay is having direct control over what’s happening. As Shiny Shoe puts it, “Instead of sending units out to do your dirty work, you take direct control of your heroic Binder, upgrading their attacks, equipment, and more in each run.” Furthermore, “Inkbound is not a card game, however, like Monster Train you’re creating and upgrading a build to change the way you engage with each roguelike run,” said Andrew Krausnick, Creative Director at Shiny Shoe.
