Tech News: Hugo Award game 2021 finalists include ‘Hades’ and ‘Animal Crossing’.
Late last year, the Hugo Awards announced that they would be honoring a video game for the first time. This week the list of six finalists was announced that the community will consider before announcing a final winner at the 79th World Science Fiction Convention in August.

The list is interesting, to say the least. The Hugo Awards is known for honoring the best in science fiction and fantasy, so it’s a bit of a surprise to find a game like Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the shortlist. That’s not to say it’s not a great game, but there were plenty of genre standouts from 2020 that could have been on the list instead, including Half-Life: Alyx, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim or Umurangi Generation. Still, between finalists like Hades, Spiritfarer, and The Last of Us: Part II, it will be interesting to see which game comes out on top.
Despite the continued call for recognition of the medium by the Hugo Awards, the World Science Fiction Society decided to experiment with a video game category only after so many of its members got into gaming a lot during the coronavirus pandemic. There is no guarantee that there will be a category for interactive experiences in the future, but Hugo’s study committee will at least consider making it a permanent addition.
