Huawei can use Qualcomm chips to sell smartphones in the US

The US has placed restrictions on Huawei to sell its Kirin chipsets used in smartphones and telecommunications equipment. This was done for national security concerns. The Trump administration then decided to be very critical of Chinese telecommunications companies. But now, according to the latest Reuters report, Qualcomm has received a license from the US Department of Commerce to sell its chipsets to Huawei.

Qualcomm has obtained permission to supply its products, including 4G chipsets, to Huawei. A Qualcomm spokesperson confirmed: “We have received a license for a number of products, which includes some 4G products.”

In August this year, the Trump administration banned all companies from selling US-developed technology and software to Huawei without obtaining a license. Considering Qualcomm is based in California, the move was to block Huawei’s access to System-on-Chip.

Huawei’s smartphone division has certainly been affected by US sanctions. Industry analysts even say that the company’s chip stocks bought before the ban could run out early next year.

Although Qualcomm will provide 4G chips to the company, it is not yet known whether US officials will allow Qualcomm to sell 5G smartphone chips. Other semiconductor companies in the United States such as Intel, AMD, and Skyworks have also obtained licenses to supply products to Huawei.

In other news, we reported it Huawei may reveal a new foldable foldable smartphone similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Some rough sketches have leaked which showed that Huawei plans to invent a flip clamshell phone in the future.
