The Center on Friday launched a “Mera Ration” mobile app that ration card holders, particularly migrant beneficiaries, can use to identify the nearest fair-priced store, check their rights details and recent transactions.
The android-based mobile application, developed by the National Informatics Center (NIC), is currently in Hindi and English. Gradually, it would be made available in 14 languages.
Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the government supplies highly subsidized food grains at Rs 1-3 per kg to over 81 crore people through the Public Distribution System (PDS). It also offers the portability service of “One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC)” ration cards in 32 states and territories of the Union.
After the launch, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said the new mobile app aims to facilitate ONORC-related services among NFSA beneficiaries, especially migrant beneficiaries, food ration traders and other stakeholders.
“We plan to have this mobile app in 14 languages. These languages are identified based on where most migrant people travel,” he said.
Among the key features, the secretary said migrant beneficiaries can register their migration details via the mobile app. Migrant beneficiaries can register before starting their journey and the system will automatically assign the eligible cereals.
Additionally, NFSA beneficiaries can identify the closest FPS, easily check the details of their grain entitlement, previous six-month transactions, and Aadhaar planting status.
“A beneficiary would actually know what he is entitled to. He doesn’t need to ask the FPS retailer how much he would get, ”Pandey said.
Beneficiaries can access by providing Aadhaar or the ration card number.
The government provides 5 kg of subsidized grain to each person per month through 5.4 lakh food rations.
