Google says all its new Pixel and Nest products are designed with recycled materials

Google has announced that all of its new Pixel and Nest products use recycled material and is ahead of schedule. Google aimed to include recycled materials in all of its Made By Google products, including Pixel phones, Pixelbooks, Google Home speakers, Nest devices, and accessories like phone cases and charging stands by 2022.

David Bourne, Google’s Sustainability Systems Architect, said in a blog post: “Google’s focus on incorporating recycled materials into hardware design not only supports our sustainability commitments, but also enables our supply chain partners to confidently invest and develop these types of materials so that even the broader consumer electronics industry can use them. “

Bourne noted that the Pixel 5’s back housing or back cover is made from 100% recycled aluminum and is the first phone to incorporate recycled aluminum. This eliminates the use of mined aluminum in the cabinet and reduces waste and reduces the carbon footprint of shell production by 35% compared to using virgin aluminum.

It also noted that Nest Audio has 70% recycled plastic between the parts of the enclosure, including the acoustic fabric, and is lined with the same sustainable fabric first introduced with Nest Mini last year. Google uses 75% post-consumer recycled plastic in the new Nest thermostat’s cover plate.

Google increased its target by committing to use recycled or renewable material in at least 50% of all plastics used in all hardware products by 2025. Bourne noted that Google aims to make its product packaging 100% free of plastic and 100% recyclable by 2025.

“To get there, we have to find out alternative, recyclable materials that will still protect our products. It will take collaboration with our suppliers, tinkering in the lab, and sharing knowledge across the industry, but we’ll get there, ”he said. Last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company aims to run all of its operations exclusively with carbon-free energy by 2030.

Google aimed to include recycled materials in all of its Made By Google products by 2022 and achieved that goal early as all of its new Pixel and Nest products included recycled material.
