Google Maps has activated a feature that will now show containment areas in Mumbai. It will help Mumbai users determine if an area is safe to travel in with a growing number of COVID-19. Mumbai currently has over 26,000 active COVID 19 cases.
COVID 19 containment zones will appear when a Google Maps user in Mumbai enables the COVID-19 layer, where demarcated zones will be displayed via a gray shaded area.
Google is working with the local municipal authority, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to find information and update data on the platform. To see the containment zones, users will need to update their Google Maps to the latest version and then select the COVID-19 information from the levels button at the top right of the app.
Commenting on this launch, a Google spokesperson said, “As people and businesses move out of the block, access to clear information on COVID-19 containment zones, as recommended by the Mumbai authorities, will allow users to take better decisions as they move around the city. This new feature strengthens our commitment to work closely with the government to disseminate useful, authoritative and relevant information to people during the pandemic. “
Google noted that it is looking forward to partnering with more cities and extending the containment zone functionality for them. Google has noted that it continually works with multiple central and state government authorities to make authentic information easily accessible to its users on different Google products.
