Google delays enforcing 30 per cent Play Store rule in India until 2022

Google has extended the timing of its 30% Play Store rule to apply to Indian developers until April 2022. The development comes against the backdrop of developer protests that have taken place against the controversial Play Store policy.

Sameer Samant, Google’s vice president of product management, told ET: “It’s not good for anyone if our partners feel they can’t grow and succeed,” he said. “So we are deeply committed to the Indian ecosystem. We will work hard, we will find ways (like this) to grow together “.

Additionally, Google India in a blog post said that Google Play’s billing system has been in place for some time and is followed by 97% of developers. “Our payments policies are not new – they are our global business model and policies and we have always required developers who distribute their apps on Play to use the Google Play billing system if they offer in-app purchases of digital goods. In fact, over 97% of developers with apps on Google Play are already compliant with the standard. ” Google noted.

“To be clear, the rule only applies if a developer charges users to download their app or if they sell in-app digital items, which is less than 3% of developers with apps on Google Play,” Google added. Globally, the commission will take effect in September next year.

Google said it is adding listening sessions, policy workshops, and extensions in the time allowed for developers to get used to Google Play’s billing system.

Samant said Google’s global approach didn’t have to be abrupt or burdensome.

Earlier this month, a TechCrunch report stated that more than 150 startups and companies in India were working to team up to launch an app store to reduce their addiction to Google. The list of entrepreneurs included Paytm, MakeMyTrip, RazorPay, PolicyBazar and ShareChat.

Paytm launched its mini-app store on Monday that will allow startups and developers to list their apps on Paytm without charging them.

Indian developers have until 2022 to comply with Google Play Store policies.
