Global tech firms in Australia unveiled a new code of conduct on Monday to curb the spread of disinformation online, following pressure from the government.
The DIGI lobbying group – representing Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft, TikTok and Redbubble – have engaged under the code in a number of actions including tagging fake content on their platforms, demoting fake content, and prioritizing credible sources of information.
They have also agreed to suspend or disable offensive and fake accounts, including “bots” that automatically disseminate information across their platforms.
