Business News: Flipkart boosts supply chain with 23,000 new hires.
Local e-commerce marketplace Flipkart said Tuesday for the past three months, between March and May 2021, that it had hired 23,000 people across the country in various capacities along its supply chain, including delivery executives.
“The growing demand for e-commerce services across the country, as people continue to stay indoors to fight the virus, has necessitated an increase in our supply chain, creating thousands of job opportunities,” Senior Vice President, Flipkart supply chain, Hemant Badri said.
Flipkart, which receives more than 90 percent of its orders in the non-essential category, has increased its facilities to meet the increased demand for online groceries as more people are forced to stay indoors by a furious second wave of COVID.
It plans to expand the capacity of its shopping distribution centers by more than 8 lakh square feet across Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and other cities during this quarter, the company said.
Launched in 2007, Flipkart claims to have a registered customer base of over 300 million, offering over 150 million products across 80 categories. Grocery platforms like BigBasket and Grofers have also stepped up hiring in the supply chain segment.
While BigBasket has hired at least 5,300 people mostly in its warehouses and delivery teams since February, rival Grofers says it has added over 2,000 since the beginning of the year.
