On Sunday, Federal Judge Carl Nichols of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia granted a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration’s ban on TikTok (via NYT).
The ban was supposed to go into effect Sunday at midnight and would have banned stores like Apple and Google from including it.
App lawyers told Judge Nichols in a Sunday morning hearing that forcing online stores to remove the app weeks before the election – and at a time of greater isolation due to the pandemic – would violate the rights of potential new users to share their views. TikTok had asked for a preliminary injunction to temporarily suspend the ban.
The court agreed and the Commerce Department said it would comply with the injunction and took immediate steps to do so.
