The root causes of under-exposure to health equity at the specialty level are broad: the lack of diversity within medical spaces, systemic and structural racism in medical education, implicit bias and cultural suppression and underestimation of the curriculum based on equity.
Despite the momentum, there is growing concern that PEs actually lack opportunities to formally learn the fundamental concepts of health equity and social justice. By that time, most EPs have enrolled in college, graduate school, medical school, and residency and have worked in community or academic medicine with no formal exposure or training in these principles.
