Tech News: Death Stranding game developer Hideo Kojima reportedly developing a new Xbox game.
Hideo Kojima is an incredibly well-known name in gaming. He has been responsible for the Metal Gear franchise and after splitting from Konami in 2015, he worked on Death Stranding in collaboration with Sony and PlayStation. Now it looks like he might be working on an Xbox title.
Jeff Grubb at VentureBeat reports that Microsoft is currently in talks with Kojima to release his next game. Grubb says he’s not sure if this deal has been signed yet, but that talks are definitely underway. If so, it appears that it would be an Xbox Global Publishing deal, meaning that Kojima’s next game could be exclusive to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. It would also almost certainly be a new IP, as Sony and Konami own Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, respectively.
The timing of this is interesting, as Kojima Productions studio art director Yoji Shinkawa recently hinted that the studio’s next game would be announced in the near future. “Well, I’m working on something, for sure, and I can probably tell you that we can announce it pretty soon,” he said.
If this game is truly exclusive to Xbox, it will be interesting to see what genre Kojima Productions goes for, whether it’s survival-horror or building on the social online connection aspects explored in Death Stranding.
This situation is exacerbated by a conspiracy theory that erupted yesterday at the reveal of the PS5-exclusive survival game Abandoned. People on Twitter and forums like Resetera noticed a lack of information about the studio and became convinced that it was secretly a Kojima game, to the point that the developers of Blue Box Game Studios released a statement quashing the rumors.
