Carl Pei makes it official, says goodbye to OnePlus with a farewell note

It’s official. Carl Pei, who co-founded OnePlus with Pete Lau in 2013, is leaving the company. Pei posted a note in the OnePlus community forums. Entitled Thank You, the note confirms previous reports that Pei will leave the company he helped start. “After nearly 7 years at OnePlus, I have made the difficult decision to say goodbye,” wrote Pei.

Pei’s note comes a few days after the media reported that he was no longer with the company. In his note, Pei wrote: “I am eternally grateful to Pete for giving this guy a chance without a degree, with nothing but a dream. Trust, mentorship and camaraderie will never be forgotten. Thanks for the opportunity of a lifetime. “

As for his next move, he didn’t say much except that he was still following his gut. He wrote: “I have never regretted believing my instincts, and this time it’s no different … I can’t wait to take some time to relax and catch up with my family and friends. . And then follow my heart for what comes next. “

Reports that have surfaced suggest that Pei has some other hardware firm in mind. It could be a new company creating a new smartphone brand. Or it could be a project related to some other gadget like a smartwatch or something futuristic.

As OnePlus grew at a staggering rate, some of its initial liveliness gave way to methods used by larger, established organizations. It’s possible that Pei felt a start-up’s loss of energy and courage and decided to start over now that the OnePlus brand was well established.

At OnePlus, Pei usually looked to marketing and brand building, while Pete Lau focused on the product side. Pei was also based in Europe and looked at the US and European market, while Lau worked from China.

OnePlus fans in India will know Pei from interactions during meetings and launches of his community. Here is his full post on the forum.

After nearly 7 years at OnePlus, I’ve made the difficult decision to say goodbye.

I grew up spending a lot of time on the internet, building products and communities. Seeing that the ideas in one’s mind could be turned into reality and impacting people’s lives gave me a lot of joy, and I quickly realized that this was the path for me.

The world didn’t need another smartphone brand in 2013. But we’ve seen ways to do things better and dreamed of shaking things up. Better products. Built hand in hand with our users. At more reasonable prices. Fast forward to date and OnePlus is a strong force to be reckoned with when it comes to flagship smartphones. And with the new Nord product line, this success will continue in new market segments.

Having just turned 24 when OnePlus was born, that’s where I spent most of my 20 years and also where I grew up. From a nervous interview with my first employee, to dealing with severe stage fright the first time I introduced a product, to learning how to manage a team. The journey was real. The things we’ve accomplished and learned, I can’t imagine a more rewarding adventure.

Our community joined the movement before we even had a product, when all we had were ambitions and ideas. From having hundreds of you showing up to have ice cream with me, thousands attending our launch events, and tens of millions buying our products around the world; I want to thank all of you for believing in us all these years.

And the team. The extraordinary people I’ve been lucky enough to fight side by side with. The friendships I’ve made here are the most precious parts of this journey. With them, the company is in good hands.

I am eternally grateful to Pete for taking a risk with this guy without a degree, with nothing but a dream. Trust, mentorship and camaraderie will never be forgotten. Thanks for the opportunity of a lifetime.

I’ve never regretted believing my instincts, and this time it’s no different. In recent years, OnePlus has been my only focus and everything else has had to take a back seat. I can’t wait to take some time to relax and catch up with my family and friends. And then follow my heart for what comes next.

With gratitude, Carl
