Canberra [Australia], February 23 (ANI / Sputnik): Facebook is about to unblock Australian news on its platform after the government agreed to amend a bill that forces the tech giant to share revenue with media companies, treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Tuesday. Last week, Facebook removed Australian news and government page posts, including posts pertaining to the Meteorological Bureau, Pandemic Response, Mental Health and Emergency Services. It came after the social networking giant failed to influence Canberra on media bargaining law. Canberra called the social network’s move a threat, a “wrong” and “heavy” step.
In a press release on Tuesday, Frydenberg announced changes to the Mandatory Bargaining Code for digital media and platforms. “The government was advised by Facebook it intends to restore the Australian news pages in the next few days, “he said.
The amendments, notes the treasurer, “will provide further clarity to digital platforms and news media activities on how the Code intends to operate and will strengthen the framework to ensure that media activities are fairly remunerated.” The changes state that any designation of a platform with the code will take into account the fact that a digital giant “has made a significant contribution to the sustainability of the Australian information industry by reaching commercial deals with media companies.”
A digital platform will be notified of the cabinet’s intention to designate it prior to any final decision, which should be made no earlier than one month after notification. Final offer arbitration will be used as a “last resort” where it is not possible to enter into business agreements in good faith. (ANI / Sputnik)
