Apple was able to achieve such high revenue in the gaming market thanks to the massive growth in mobile gaming, which now makes up over half (~52%) of the market. As Apple takes a considerable cut of all purchases made through their App store, and have controversially required app developers to manage transactions through it, it comes as no surprise that they are this far up the list.
According to a NewZoo analysis, Apple had the third biggest gaming revenue of any publicly traded firm in 2021, trailing only Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and Nintendo. Apple had an estimated $15.3 billion USD ($21.3 billion AUD) of the $126 billion USD ($175.6 billion AUD) earned in 2021, and was only surpassed by Sony and Tencent. Tencent, which owns games like PUBG: Mobile and League of Legends, was the clear leader in the sector with $32.2 billion USD.
Highlights
2022 is likely to be very different, as both Microsoft and Sony make new acquisitions (Activision-Blizzard and Bungie respectively) and stock shortages of dedicated gaming hardware such as PC parts and consoles begin to ease.
