Apple HomePod mini brings Siri-powered computational audio for affordable price

Apple has launched the compact version of its Siri speaker called HomePod mini. The latest speaker looks like a fish soup, in a way that’s loosely inspired by Amazon’s latest Echo speakers. The Apple HomePod mini has a touch sensitive ring on the top that, when touched, calls Siri within reach. It has the same mesh design as the big HomePod, but now it looks more refined.

The HomePod mini costs Rs 9,990 in India and $ 99 in the US. Pre-orders begin on November 6 in India, around the same time they begin in the West. Shipping will begin November 16 on the Apple Online Store and Apple Authorized Resellers. It is available in white and space gray.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said his new HomePod mini is “the exciting new product for your home.” Of course, Apple is betting big on smart home devices, which will push Siri further into the customers’ home. But Apple is improving its game when it comes to sound quality. It uses the algorithm-facilitated S5 chip to deliver what Apple calls “computational audio” that will process the music to play 180 times per second. It essentially measures the size of the room to create a surrounding effect that has optimal volume and dynamic range.

Apple’s U1 ultrawideband chip is placed inside the HomePod mini which will enable a “new transfer experience” between Apple devices. Apple is also introducing intercom with HomePod mini which will allow you to communicate with family members who use any of Apple’s devices, including other HomePods, iPhone, iPad and even CarPlay. AirPods will also receive these intercom messages, and you can respond using both voice and text, depending on the device you are interacting with. Multiple HomePod minis can be paired together as part of the “stereo pairing” within a home.

Powering the audio of the HomePod mini are the main driver, two passive radiators and the acoustic waveguide on the bottom. Apple is doubling down on its sound technology with HomePod mini, which is why it is integrating a horde of smart devices with HomePod mini with the help of the Home app. Any Apple device will be able to control a range of devices, but HomePod mini will better control them with Siri-assisted voice alone.

Apple is also focusing on privacy with HomePod mini speakers. “With HomePod mini, only after ‘Hey Siri’ is recognized locally on the device, or the user activates Siri by touch, will any information be sent to Apple’s servers,” Apple said in a statement.
