Amazon Prime Video expands its horizons as the platform now enters live sports streaming, particularly cricket matches. Amazon Prime on Tuesday made it public that they have joined New Zealand Cricket. The streaming giant has bought the exclusive rights to stream live NZC matches in India for the next six years.

With this announcement, Amazon Prime becomes the first Indian streaming platform to grant exclusive live cricket rights from a major cricket board. As per agreement, Amazon can stream all matches of BLACKCAPS (New Zealand Men’s National Cricket Team) and WHITE FERNS (New Zealand Women’s National Cricket Team) based in New Zealand in India through different match formats of cricket such as ODI, T20 and Tests until 2025-26.

The multi-year deal between Amazon and NZC includes Team India’s New Zealand tour in early 2022 and a second tour, the dates of which will be announced later. The rights for the 2020-2021 season starting later this month are expected to be syndicated by Amazon.

“We are thrilled to be working with New Zealand Cricket in this endeavor as they have a strong, passionate and much loved cricket team, and the cricket rivalry between the two countries has been fantastic,” said Gaurav Gandhi, Director and Country General Manager by Amazon Prime Video. “We are delighted to make this collaboration with New Zealand Cricket our first live sport offering in India and are confident that our Prime members will be delighted with this initiative.”

Whereas, New Zealand Cricket CEO David White said, “This partnership with Amazon Prime Video is huge for NZC – we are delighted and proud to partner with such a successful and famous brand.” David further added: “One of NZC’s key goals is to extend the global reach of our teams and build closer relationships around the world, and in terms of that particular goal, we don’t think we can be in better hands. India has always been an important market for us; no other country follows cricket like India, so it’s exciting to announce this deal with India’s leading streamer. “

In addition to New Zealand-based cricket matches, Amazon will live stream Thursday Night Football, Premier League, ATP Tour, WTA, US Open (tennis), UEFA Champions League and Nations Cup. Autumn (rugby) as part of the signed agreement between two parties.

Amazon Prime Video already features shows like Mid Wicket Tales With Naseeruddin Shah, The Test: A New Era For Australia’s Team, All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur, All or Nothing: Manchester City and more to keep sports fans interested. While these shows are highly rated by viewers, the streaming giant entering live sports streaming could be a hit.
