Airtel subscription base is bigger than Reliance Jio, TRAI reports

The number of telecommunications subscribers has increased due to the new coronavirus pandemic. When everyone languished in the COVID-19 blockade, telecom companies benefited as more and more people signed up. Bharti Airtel Limited is one of the Indian telecom services companies that outperformed the others in August 2020. According to a latest report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), it is noted that Airtel has added more subscribers than Jio in the mentioned period of time.

Bharti Airtel Limited counted 28.99 lakhs of subscribers, while Reliance Jio lagged behind with 18.64 lakhs of subscribers added in August. This was followed by government-owned telecommunications BSNL with 2 lakh subscribers. Although these three telecom companies have seen an increase in the number of wireless subscribers, some companies continued to lose subscribers in the same month. For example, Vodafone Idea lost subscribers with a decline of 12.28 lakhs in August.

Significantly, Jio enjoyed the largest share in the wireless telecommunications market with a market share of 35.08%. Bharti Airtel Limited came in second with a market share of 28.12%.

The TRAI report states that total wireless subscribers increased from 1.14,418 crore to 1.14,792 crore in a month from July to August respectively. But the addition of Jio subscribers dropped in August 2020. Reliance Jio subscribers dropped from 35.54 lakh to 18.64 lakh.

On the other hand, Airtel’s subscriber base decreased from 32.60 lakh to 28.99 lakh from July to August 2020. But when the number of subscriptions is compared to Jio’s, Bharti Airtel witnesses a win-win situation. for all by adding 10 lakhs more subscribers in August.

Regions including Calcutta, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, SU (O), Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Assam, Orissa, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Mumbai, Northeast, Punjab and Delhi have seen the monthly growth rate maximum number of wireless subscribers in that time period.

As the report states, “All service areas showed growth except Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, UP (E) and Jammu and Kashmir in their wireless subscribers during August-20. The Kolkata service area and Himachal Pradesh showed a peak growth of 1.13% in its wireless subscriber base during the month. “

While Airtel and Jio took the top two spots by increasing their subscriber base, Vodafone Idea lost around 25 lakh of subscribers from its July subscriber base. BSNL made a modest gain of 2.14 lakh in subscribers in August.
